In the spring semester of 1994 a small group of men petitioned
to establish a colony of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia National Fraternity
on the campus of Western Carolina University. Their petition was
granted and the North Carolina Beta Colony began their work to start
a new chapter of Phi Mu Alpha. In January of 1995, the colony moved
into phase II of colonization. With the help of the Rho Tau chapter
of Appalachian State University, the fourteen members of the colony
began their probationary membership period.
On April 29, 1995, on the campus of Appalachian State University,
Omicron Epsilon was presented with a charter by national president
Dr. Richard A. Crosby and Province 20 governor John Doherty. Those
fourteen men became known as the Alpha class.
Since that time the chapter has worked hard to become a leader
in the state of North Carolina. Having produced 2 CPR's, 4 ACPR's,
the first province historian, a province webmaster, and over 100
collegiate brothers in its short history, the chapter has proven
itself a valuable addition to the national fraternity. The chapter
continues to provide service to the department of music and the
university community, through special programs, recitals, volunteer
work, and musical events.
