Cullowhee, NC, September 28, 2016– On the morning of Saturday, September 24th, 2016, the Western North Carolina community came together on the campus of Western Carolina University in support of a great cause. The 2016 Mountain Heritage Day 5k, one of the many activities associated with the university’s Mountain Heritage Day Festival, was coordinated by students in WCU’s sport management program as part of their coursework. The event, which featured great weather and a challenging course through campus, attracted 108 race participants as well as dozens of spectators and volunteers. After the race, the top 3 male and female finishers in each of the four age categories were recognized and awarded medals. Daniel Hyatt (20:06) and Jennifer Black (20:48) were also recognized as the top male and female overall winners. Their names will now be etched into the Mountain Heritage Day Cup, which is prominently displayed by the WCU College of Business in the Forsyth Building in the heart of campus.
Mountain Heritage Day is "a combination old-fashioned mountain fair and showcase for Southern Appalachian music, arts, dance and song, with the atmosphere of a big family reunion.” It is always held on the last Saturday of September on the campus of Western Carolina University. The Sport Management Association (SMA) is a student-run organization for those interested in the sport industry. All proceeds from the annual Mountain Heritage Day 5k support the Sport Management Association Scholarship Fund.
